Journalist Shanta Wijesuriya was attacked by the police in front of Nugegoda police station when he went to cover the demonstration held on the occasion of the one year anniversary of surrounding the former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s house in Mirihana.
Journalist Tharidu Jayawardena has approached the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka regarding the attack on journalist Shantha Wijesuriya. Regarding the attack on journalist Wijesuriya on 04.06.2023, a complaint 1710/2023 has been made to the Inspector General’s office.
About six months ago, when journalist Shantha Wijesuriya inquired about the complaint made to the Inspector General’s office an officer said it was referred to the Deputy Inspector General’s Legal Department following reference number 319483. When journalist Wijesuriya again inquired about the same complaint from the Inspector General’s Office on 3 May, he received the same reply that the complaint had been referred to the IGP’s Legal Department.
The Human Rights Commission has been established to investigate and intervene in cases of violations of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution to the public from the police, the armed forces and government institutions. On 3 May 2024, one year and three days have passed since the complaint was made to the Human Rights Commission regarding the rights violations of journalist Shantha Wijesuriya, but no action has been taken.
The Human Rights Commission is established by the government and is employed by people who receive salaries from the public’s tax money. Capitalist states are governed by a group of people who are elected by the people every five years.
In order to prevent public uprisings against the rise of disappearances, abductions, killings, other harassments and usurpation of rights by the governments against the labor-oppressed people, to prevent a challenge to the capitalist system, the purpose of establishing such institutions is to instill the confidence in the public, there is a so-called democracy and protection of human rights that are not in the government.
Capitalism needs no alternatives.
If the capitalist governments suppress the democratic rights of the people, the people have been immersed in the ice water of the myth that the police commission, the election commission, the human rights commission and the judiciary can protect democracy as well as legal protection.
The human rights organization of the United Nations or any other organization has not been able to stop the extermination attack that Israel is carrying out with the help of the imperialists against the Palestinian workers-oppressed people. With the start of the Israeli-Palestinian war, they were exposed to the human form and neutrality of those organizations. It was also revealed that those organizations are dependent on imperialists and arms smugglers. Therefore, no matter how exposed they are, they do not have the ability to influence the imperialists.
The true nature of those organizations will be revealed during wars, conflicts, struggles and crises, both international and national.
He says that when police officers brutally assaulted Lahiru Weerasekera, national organizer of “Tomorrows organization” a youth belonging to Frontline Socialist Party in front of the Nugegoda police check post, the police officers attacked journalist Shantha Wijesuriya who went to take pictures of the event and tried to take away the camera.
Journalist Wijesuriya was beaten by the neck for allegedly obstructing the duties of an Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the Mirihana Police. Shantha Wijesuriya, who publicly denied the accusation made by the Superintendent of Police for obstructing the work, was known to be a disdainful attack against the media.
Sirasa journalist Vindhya Prasad Karunaratne, who recorded the attack on journalist Shantha Wijesuriya, was reprimanded by the Assistant Superintendent of Police Rodrigo of the Riot Police and the Assistant Superintendent of Police who attacked journalist Wijesuriya, threatened Karunaratne by checking his media identity card.
Violating the right of speech and expression as stated in the capitalist constitution, the police in order to protect Ranil Rajapaksa attacked and chased away the youths who participated in the celebration protests on May 31, 2023, on the occasion of the one year anniversary of surrounding the Mirihana residence of former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa
The police did not even allow them to stay on the pavement but attacked the youths and even tore their shirts. Some youths were arrested and later released.
Despite the fact that the police stormed the protestors and the attack on the protestors was broadcast on social media as well as on TV channels, the workers-oppressed people, the so-called leftists and others failed to mobilize against the capitalist government, the lack of a clear political vision and at least the challenge and exposure of capitalist democracy. Even the procedures were not suitable because of their double-minded approach to capitalist democracy.
