An investigation led by Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya has revealed that young police officers serving in police stations, especially in the Colombo district, are addicted to drug use.
The Police Headquarters states that those officers who are addicted to drugs will be referred for medical tests in the future and will be dismissed from the police service after confirming their status.
The Police Headquarters further states that the officers who are addicted to drugs are those who have recently joined to the police service.
Investigations have revealed that most of them are attached to police stations in the Colombo district and that most of them have close links with drug traffickers.
13 police officers are involved in various misconduct incidents, 21 police officers arrested with drugs, 156 police officers addicted to drugs and 130 police officers who have links with drug traffickers, according to a confidential report sent by the former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne to Defense Secretary Major General Kamal Gunaratne.
From 1 November 2021 to 31 October 2022 report further revealed that 283 incidents of obstructing the duties of police officers and 359 police officers involved in various misconduct incidents have been reported up to date, and this is beyond the normal situation.
