After fourteen years of Conservative Party rule, the United Kingdom experienced a historic power shift. It was a Red Tsunami as the Labor Party led by Keir Starmer recorded a resounding election victory.

Worst defeat for the Conservatives in recent history.

The Labor Party has won 412 seats and formed the new government, while the Conservative Party, which has been in power for fourteen years, has won only 121 seats this time. It was their heaviest defeat in history and their vote bank dropped by 20 percent. The number of seats they have lost this time is 250. Keir Starmer has won 211 new seats. The third-placed was won by Liberal Democrats taking 63 seats.

In the 650-seat UK House of Commons, Keir Starmer has easily won the majority needed to form the new Labor government and become the Prime Minister of the UK. His main challenge now is to deliver  his election promises of “change” made to the electorate. What is more difficult than winning an election is fulfilling the election promises made to the people.

The basic objection of the people

The main objection of the common people of the United Kingdom was that the quality of their lives had not improved under the fourteen years of Conservative rule. Economic priorities remain its main issue. Despite the UK being the sixth largest economy, the public did not feel the benefits. Inflation has been running rampant for the past few years (now under some control). Recently, the number of poor people receiving free food items through food banks has reached a record level.

The number of poor people increase

The poverty of the UK public has grown to 18 percent. Waiting times for surgery in the National Health Service (NHS) have tripled since David Cameron took office in 2010. Unemployment has grown. Economic growth is at a record low. The tax burden has increased. The unresolved immigration issue has plagued voters for years. Since 2006, the internal power struggles, fraud, corruption and malfeasance of Conservative governments have shamed the people.

David Cameron for Prime Ministership

After twelve years of Labor rule, the Conservative Party led by David Cameron won the 2010 General Election. Despite securing 306 seats, the Conservative Party could not pass the simple majority threshold of 326 seats. The Labor Party’s rule did not deteriorate significantly and they won 258 seats. David Cameron therefore had to form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats. In the 2015 General Election, David Cameron won 330 seats and established a single government by securing the trust of the people.

The Brexit battle that crippled the Conservative government

But that progress was interrupted by the Brexit vote held in 2016. The leaders of the Labor and Liberal Democrats, along with Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party, opposed the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. But Boris Johnson, the second-ranking leader of the Conservative Party, led the fight to leave the European Union. Danny Kruger supported Nigel Farage, a Johnson-type nationalist far-right. Johnson and Farage set the UK on fire.

Johnson and Farage’s subterfuge

They told the people that by leaving the European Union, the United Kingdom can achieve great economic growth, the economic and living standards of the people will increase, and welfare services such as health and education will be strengthened. Various calculations were presented to justify but today it has been confirmed that all those stories are false.

The political scoundrel who deceives the people

Boris Johnson led the fight to leave the EU as a way for himself to become the leader of the Conservative Party. The “Partygate” incident showed the world that he is a political stooge who deceives people at any moment for his survival. The majority of people in the UK today believe that their decision to leave the EU was wrong and that they were deceived.

The economic damage caused by leaving the European Union…

According to a recent survey conducted by the British Global Institute, 59 percent of people believe that the UK economy has suffered a significant setback due to leaving the European Union. Among those who voted to leave the European Union, 34 percent accept that view. Meanwhile, the majority of members of the main political parties today believe that the UK’s economic situation has worsened due to the Brexit decision. 58 percent of those who took part in this survey believe that the UK should work closely with the EU again.

The 44-day prime minister who destroyed the economy.

David Cameron resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party after losing the 2016 Brexit vote. In the eight years that followed, the political storms created four Conservative Prime Ministers. Johnson’s successor, Liz Truss, was limited to 44 days in office. The economic program she introduced caused fiscal markets to crash and interest rates to rise. The British pounds fell.

Boris Johnson is a Donald Trump-type political stooge. These kinds of populist, nationalist, extreme right-wingers only want to gain power somehow. To achieve that they do any bestial work. They have no responsibility for the damage caused to the country and to the public. Nigel Farage, a nationalist extreme right-winger who supported Boris Johnson in the Brexit election campaign, has become a demon challenging the Conservative Party today. In 2016, it was Boris Johnson who unleashed that demon. Nigel Farage tried to win a parliamentary seat eight times before this, but it was unsuccessful.

Reform UK grabs Conservative votes

But he realized his dream through the fascist far-right party Reform UK, which he created this time. His new party has won four seats and it is special that all those seats were won from the  Conservative Party. Political analysts point out that Reform UK has about 15 percent of the votes, which are the votes taken from the Conservative Party. Most of the more than 250 seats lost to the Conservatives this year were due to votes taken by Reform UK. Nigel Farage has managed to attract far-right Conservative voters and these are the protest votes casted against the Conservative Party.

How will Conservatives regain its votes from Reform UK ?

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party is an anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic, anti-minority, white nationalist fascist party. His candidates have publicly expressed fascist far-right views throughout the campaign. Such fascist parties have recently emerged strongly throughout Europe. Now the United Kingdom has joined that list. The challenge ahead for the Conservatives is whether Reform UK will turn to the far right to win back the votes it stole.

Populist politics

Short-term gains can be achieved through populist politics. They are like sky sticks. For a short while, the darkness darkens the sky and fades away. But in the long run, there are defeats.
The historic defeat of the Conservative Party this time is the latest example of this.
