Police arrested two youths who were trying to escape after shooting a man at a mobile phone shop in Kotahena, Colombo, and later took them to show their weapons and shot them dead.
These youths were arrested on the night of February 20 and the police shot them dead in the early hours of the 21 February.
It is said that when one of the arrested suspects tried to snatch a firearm from a police officer and tried to shoot him, the officer shot the suspects in self-defense. It is also reported that when the two youths tried to escape after the shooting, the public caught them, tied them up with ropes and handed them over to the police. However the police shot and killed two youths from the Colombo Modara and Jamburaliya Madapatha.
Police say that the mobile shop owner Shashi Kumar was shot to death by 31 year old Ashoka Lakmal who is a resident of Madapatha. Ashoka Lakmal has served in the Artillery Corps of the Sri Lanka Army and has not reported for duty. However he was reported to be retired from military service in accordance with the amnesty granted to those who left the military service during the reign of former President Maithripala Sirisena.
He was an unmarried youth, worked as a labourer and is also addicted to drugs. An officer from the Grandpass police had told relatives that the Kotahena police shot and killed the youths and later handed them over to the Grandpass police. It is reported that the bullet lodged in Lakmal’s shoulder had penetrated his liver and entered his body. His funeral is scheduled to be held tomorrow (24).
